The very best female basketball players are heading to south Auckland this August and September for the 2021 Sal’s NBL season with all 33 games to be played at Pulman Arena.
The five-week season will feature six teams – reigning champions Harbour Breeze, Auckland Dream, Waikato Wizards, Capital Swish, Canterbury Wildcats and Otago Gold Rush.
Proudly supported by Auckland Unlimited and presented by SkyCity, the season will also include a high-level of integration with the local south Auckland community, schools and in particular, junior girls playing basketball.
“Last year’s shortened 18in18 season in south Auckland was a great success, so we are all very excited that we will again be performing in such a strong basketball region in front of some extremely passionate fans,” said League General Manager, Justin Nelson.
“Along with our key commercial partners, the support by Auckland Unlimited has again provided an opportunity for our elite athletes to play on the big stage at Pulman Arena.
“I know they are very excited about returning to an extended season, and to once again be a part of the local south Auckland community.”
Auckland Unlimited Head of Major and Business Events Richard Clarke says: “The event is a great opportunity to engage with the local community, schools and over the course of the five-week tournament will encourage people to visit the region,” says Clarke.
“This is a fantastic sporting event building upon the popularity and growth of women’s basketball in this country and will help inspire the next generation of basketball stars. Fans will be able to watch some dynamic basketball in a great venue, while giving a boost to the local economy.”
The League will again be partnered by Sal’s Authentic New York Pizza, Auckland Unlimited, SkyCity, Sky Sport, Basketball New Zealand, R-Line and Molten.
The season tips-off on Thursday August 12 with games being played every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Across the 19 nights of competition, 14 will feature double-headers.
