Round 1 is loaded with intrigue but at this point of the season we have way more questions then we have answers. Here are the big questions this weekend will answer - game by game, plus a few league‑wide storylines to frame the opening stanza.

Pouākai can roll out Charlotte Whittaker (191cm) and Abigail Fogg (193cm); Hoiho counter with Jessie Edwards (193cm) and Bec Pizzey (190cm). The opening possession battle - defensive rebounding rate and second‑chance points - will reveal who gets to impose their will on the game and dictate tempo.
Expect a green light for Taylor Mikesell and seamless two‑guard orchestration as she and Morgan Yaeger act as lead ball carriers and offense initiators . If the 3 point rate spikes without turnovers, the new‑look Pouākai may be scary fast, scary early.
The Hoiho PG is a tempo governor who has the vision to lead the league in assists. But the pace of the Pouākai will lift the rate of mistakes for their opposition and the Hoiho are the first team to test the new look squad. If Bradley keeps down the turnovers (not just hers but the overall squads as well) against Pouākai pressure while feeding the finishers in rhythm, Tauihi's Southernmost team can make it a half‑court grind.
Marena Whittle & Mckenna Dale bring two‑way stability for Pouākai; Sammy Gallaher & Eva Langton offer shooting and glue for Hoiho. The bench plus/minus in the closing minutes of quarters could decide it.

Lou Brown + Penina Davidson (both 190cm) might be the league’s best glass duo and both will push double figures every time they touch the hardwood. If Whai keep DREB% competitive, their transition game (led by Cowling/Dalton) ignites.
Cowling as the Whai hub vs the Queens’ three‑guard machine (Wallace–Cole–Lupfer). Early makes from deep will influence help rules and post spacing. If the Queens are firing from range their post presence becomes even more valuable. If the Whai can find the range they'll pull the tall timber from the post, opening opportunities for paint penetration and second chance points.
If Lupfer/Cole stretch the floor, high‑low actions to Brown/Davidson become automatic - and foul trouble follows for Whai bigs.

The Kāhu guard battery (Tupaea, Matharu, Roberts, with Mansfield closing) challenges Mainland’s size. If Kāhu hold their own on the glass, their efficiency from deep could test the Pouākai defenense.
How do Whittle/Dale steady the minutes load after Friday? Back‑to‑backs reveal bench cohesion and conditioning, which is still developing in the early season. Can the Pouākai did deep and set themselves up after week 1 or will the task prove to be a bridge too far in the opening weekend of the season?
If Fogg/Whittaker draw early fouls, Kāhu’s rim aggression (Matharu/Roberts) may pile free throws. Flip it, and Kāhu’s smalls could be living on jumpers late.
Opening‑week rebound rate + turnover margin is the cleanest predictor of sustainable form. Watch which teams bank extra shots without sacrificing shot quality.
First impressions matter. Shot selection, defensive communication, and conditioning will tell us who’s plug‑and‑play vs who needs reps. Who will raise their hands as this season's superstars to watch?
If multiple teams top 75–80 possessions per game this weekend, we can expect a faster league across #T4 with bombing away from deep and pace pushing. If half‑court efficiency carries the day, spacing and set execution become the story, dominated by defensive rebounding and grinding play in the post.
Everybody gets all excited about who starts, but hoopers know that who finishes games is where the coaching staff's trust lies. We’ll get our first look at finishing groups, and see who is exactly makes those coaches’ trusted lists in real time. Dual‑handler line‑ups? Twin towers? Five‑out shooting? Opening weekend will let us know.
