Next Steps for Hoiho and Nuggets: BBNZ Exploring Future Options

Basketball New Zealand Working to Secure Future for Southern Hoiho and Otago Nuggets

Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) acknowledges the decision by Sports Entertainment Network (SEN) not to seek an extension of the licence for the Hoiho for the 2025 season and to exit its involvement with the Otago Nuggets at the conclusion of the Nuggets 2025 season.

BBNZ’s strong preference is to secure the ongoing presence of both teams in their competitions and is actively working with SEN to facilitate a smooth transition. Expressions of interest for new ownership will open soon as part of a process to endeavour to secure a sustainable future for both franchises in the South Island.

“We recognise the importance of these teams to our professional leagues and to their communities and our immediate priority is to find the right solution for their long-term sustainability,” said Dillon Boucher, CEO of Basketball New Zealand. “Our priority is to secure a stable future for both teams, and we look forward to engaging with interested parties as we work through this process.”

The NBL and Tauihi competitions would like to thank SEN for developing the reputation of both teams and their brands while they were entrusted as steward of the franchises.

Further updates will be provided as discussions progress.
