Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa celebrates a landmark moment for the league and women’s sport across the country, with Olympic champion Dame Lisa Carrington joining the ownership group of the BNZ Northern Kāhu.
Widely regarded as one of Aotearoa’s most successful athletes, Dame Lisa’s involvement brings immense mana, leadership, and visibility to the women’s basketball landscape. Her decision to invest in the BNZ Northern Kāhu reflects the rising momentum of the Tauihi league and the growing support for wāhine in professional sport.
“Sport – especially women’s sport – is such an exciting and important space. It has the power to influence far beyond the game itself, and this opportunity to contribute to something bigger was one I couldn’t pass up,” said Dame Lisa Carrington.
“I’m deeply passionate about making a genuine impact – elevating visibility, generating energy, and inspiring the next generation of wāhine toa. Kāhu Basketball is building real momentum, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead – not just for Kāhu, but for the growth of women’s basketball.”
Carrington’s investment is seen as a significant boost not just for the BNZ Northern Kāhu, but for the entire Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa league. Her involvement is expected to increase the sport’s visibility, expand community reach, and inspire the next generation of female athletes across Aotearoa.
BNZ Northern Kāhu General Manager and co-owner Jo Caird said the addition of Dame Lisa to the ownership group marks a transformative moment for the team.
“Welcoming Dame Lisa Carrington to our ownership group represents a transformative moment for BNZ Northern Kāhu Basketball,” said Caird. “Lisa's winning mentality, professionalism, and passion for women's sport perfectly align with our vision. Beyond her incredible sporting achievements, she brings invaluable leadership experience and a genuine commitment to creating pathways for young women in sport. Her involvement will elevate our organisation both on and off the court as we continue building something special with Kāhu Basketball."
This announcement comes at a time of growth for the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa league, with increasing fan engagement, stronger media coverage, and an expanding national footprint. Carrington’s decision to step into a leadership role reflects a growing trend of prominent athletes supporting and investing in the women’s game.
The 2025 Tauihi season begins in late September.
