2degrees Girls Got Game and Tauihi Partner to Get More Girls Playing Basketball

2degrees Girls Got Game and G.J. Gardner Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa push to get 1,000 more girls playing basketball in 2024

G.J. Gardner Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa is proud to announce a partnership with 2degrees Girls Got Game on a programme designed to get 1,000 more girls shooting hoops this year.

2degrees Girls Got Game is Basketball New Zealand’s national participation programme which aims to get more girls playing basketball more often through fun, friendly, and positive experiences.

Players from every team across the league will partner with local schools to get more girls playing basketball across the season to make sure that everyone who wants to get involved in basketball has the opportunity all across Aotearoa.

This 2degrees Girls Got Game partnership will see more than 50 new opportunities for girls to play basketball delivered across Aotearoa by the country’s top female Franchises and their players thanks also to the additional support of Sky Sport who continue to seek proactive ways to lift women’s sport across Aotearoa.

Maree Taylor, GM of Leagues says "We are thrilled as a league to partner with 2degrees Girls Got Game once again to provide young women across New Zealand the opportunity to develop their basketball skills and confidence. This partnership aligns with our vision of empowering the next generation of female athletes and ensuring that every girl, no matter where she’s from, has the chance to participate and thrive in the sport we love.

Having recently come on board as Basketball New Zealand’s Women & Girls Transformation Partner, and Tall Ferns naming rights sponsor, 2degrees are incredibly passionate about providing more opportunities and increased visibility for women and girls' sport.

Mark Callander, 2degrees CEO, says “Research shows that teenage years are when many young women stop playing sport. The research also shows that playing sport fosters mental and physical well-being, leads to lasting friendships, and helps people develop team-building skills that will stay with them their whole lives.

“That’s why we are thrilled to be part of this Kaupapa.”

The mission of the 2degrees Girls Got Game programme is to create more opportunities for girls across the country to play basketball. Then, throughout the programme girls can explore the sport, development confidence and connections and ultimately grow to love the game.

BBNZ Participation and Wellbeing Lead Meaghan Wilby, says “This partnership will create considerable leverage opportunities in the women and girls' game, greater connection between talent and aspiring players, and also create more opportunities on the ground for girls to get out and explore the game of basketball and what it can offer them.”

“This partnership will enable women and girls' basketball to continue to thrive across Aotearoa and empower a national sense of community and connection across all levels of the game.”
