Pouākai Finish Strong to Take Road Win

A dominant fourth period carried Yellow I Glass Mainland Pouākai to a 29-19 road win over Tauranga Whai.

Trailing 17-16 at three-quarter time, Pouākai outscored their hosts 13-2 in the final spell. Sari Mowbray initiated the run before the St Andrew’s College trio of Ava Jones, Emilia Ainley and Eva Jeffries made important contributions, with a Mowbray triple icing the win.

Earlier, a quarter-time buzzer-beating Hail Mary from Carla Pitman propelled the Whai to an 8-4 lead.

Pitman was again on the mark before scores from Ainley and Mowbray trimmed the Whai advantage to 12-9 at half-time.

Seven points from Rebekah Frisby-Smith tilted the balance in favour of Pouākai, only for forwards Eva Langton and Emilee Tahata to restore the Whai lead at the three-quarter mark.

From there, it was Mainland on the march.

Tauranga Whai 19 - Eva Langton 5pts, Carla Pitman 5pts

Yellow I Glass Mainland Pouākai 29 - Rebekah Frisby-Smith 10pts, Sari Mowbray 8pts, Ava Jones 5pts

Queens Erupt for Record-Equalling 53

Tokomanawa Queens pulled away in the second half to inflict a 53-33 defeat on Southern Hoiho in Porirua on Sunday.

A 20-point victory looked highly unlikely at half-time, with the Queens just two points ahead at 22-20 after Tia Pavihi and Abby Harris had led the way for the Southerners.

Although Alexa Duff gave Hoiho the lead after the resumption, Ameia Williams initially, and then Hana Lacey-Rameka, pulled the Queens clear. The pair scored eight points apiece in the third quarter to give the hosts a 38-26 lead with a quarter to play.

The Queens controlled proceedings in the fourth, with Alaska Rhebok scoring the final nine points to round out a comprehensive win. The 53 points set a new Queens single-game record and equalled the all-time Women’s Rapid League mark.

Tokomanawa Queens 53 - Ameia Williams 14pts, Hana Lacey-Rameka 12pts, Alaska Rhebok 11pts, Grace Hunter 6pts
