ANZCO Tokomanawa Queens (84) defeat The BNZ Northern Kāhu (59)
Queens power their way to victory behind a dominant performance by Penina Davidson
Game Recap:
The Queens were clinical on both ends from the tip on Friday night and stormed out to 31 first quarter points and they didn't slow down from there as they pulled 25 point victory, despite being without floor general Kristy Wallace. To make up for the loss of their starting pg the home side relied on their power, smashing the offensive glass to grab 16 O boards and a plus 12 rebound advantage over the Kāhu. Davidson would finish with 21 points and 21 rebounds, but despite the gargantuan stat line didn't do it alone, as 4 out of 5 starters would hit double figures with Stella Beck and Jihyun Park both on 16 while Lou Brown grabbed her own double double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Abi Curtin would lead the way for the road team, but the lack of rebounding was compounded by a lack of efficiency as the Kāhu's two leading scorers (Lauren Mansfield and Haliegh Reinoehl) would combine to hit just 5-28 from the floor. The Kāhu will get their next chance to notch their first win of the season next Friday, but the Queens will be back on the court in less than 48 hours as they travel to Dunedin with a share first place on the line.
