Probuild ITM Mainland Pouakai (88) defeated BNZ Northern Kāhu (83) as Taylor Mikesell led the way with a double double for a Pouākai team that would dominate the glass to hold off a late charge from a determined Kāhu side.
The Pouākai and Kāhu took part in a hard fought contest to close the opening round of action, with the visitors finding a higher level of execution down the stretch to take the victory. Taylor Mikesell (23pts) carried the offensive load in the first half for the visitors, who found themselves down 10 points halfway through the 1st quarter as Haliegh Reinoehl (31pts) found her form from deep early in the game. It was a physical contest throughout but the Pouākai were up to the challenge as they imposed their will on the glass where they took home a 54-39 advantage on the glass. The Kāhu played tough defense throughout to work their way back into the lead on a Jasmyne Roberts fade away. But the Pouākai would fight back as Mikesell and Marena Whittle hit big jumpers before McKenna Dale sealed the game at the free throw line

The Pouākai played masterful defense throughout the game holding the Kāhu to just 13% shooting from the field. Early on it was McGoldrick doing the damage offensively in the first half, where she scored 10 of her 12 points, while also locking in defensively with 2 first half blocks. The Kāhu would rally in the second half, getting to the free throw line with regularity, but Emma Rogers found her way to the basket with little resistance as she joined McGoldrick on a game high 12 points. The Kāhu will look to go back to the drawing board offensively, but did get 8 points from Azure Anderson as Mary Morton-Jones controlled the glass with 9 boards.
