G.J. Gardner Homes Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa is thrilled to unveil the full 2023 season schedule, which tips off on July 12 with the defending champion Tokomanawa Queens hosting the Southern Hoiho.
General Manager of Leagues Maree Taylor is excited to build on the success of the inaugural season and keep the momentum going heading into season two.
“Our expectations were exceeded with the response that Tauihi received last year. We established ourselves as a destination for global and local basketball talent and we’re confident that we’ll raise the bar even further in 2023,” said Taylor.
“With women’s sport starting to gain deserved recognition in New Zealand and around the globe, we want to continue showcasing Tauihi and the potential it has for everyone involved.”
Teams will play each other three times across eight regular season rounds, with the Top-4 teams moving through to the Final 4 on September 9-10.
Fans won’t have to wait long to see the Grand Final rematch from 2022 – the Queens and Northern Kāhu are set to battle on July 23 in Auckland.
There will be one trip to Queenstown in 2023 with the Hoiho and Whai squaring off on August 13 at the Queenstown Events Centre.
Sky Sport Head of Commercial and league commentator Justin Nelson is pleased to see the growth of Tauihi after its inaugural season.
“The inaugural Tauihi season was a huge success, packed with WNBA players, elite Kiwis and rising local stars. We can’t wait for season two to tip-off.”
“The introduction of the Rapid League adds a creative twist and is a unique concept we believe viewers will like. Sky will be broadcasting all 64 games. It’s going to be fun,” said Nelson.
Rapid League games will tip-off approximately one hour before every scheduled Tauihi fixture.
An exciting new innovation coming in 2023, Rapid League will offer the opportunity for those outside of the starting five in Tauihi to play and enhance their game. More information on the exciting new innovation coming to Tauihi in 2023 can be found here: http://bbnz.link/du0y6
